A broadband project to be completed in 2026 will bring high-speed internet to Gary, addressing a longstanding disparity between the city and its neighbors.

“It is communities like Gary that are trailblazing and making a difference within the connectivity space."

The Broadband-Ready ordinance will go before the City Council on third and final reading on Sept. 6.

Nearly 50 percent of Gary residents are not subscribed to a broadband service. Town officials hope that $5 million of ARPA funds will eventually reduce that digital divide by 90 percent.

Gary Community School Corp. is working with local partners to put free Wi-Fi in six city parks, increase broadband subscriptions, attract e-commerce and provide technology training for seniors.

The four ARPA appropriation requests will be on the Feb. 15 city council agenda.
