The wind was blowing in all afternoon at U.S. Ballpark, knocking down flyball after flyball in Monday’s Class 2 state semifinal game. Then, for two at-bats, Russellville blasted a pair of extra-base hits into the right-center field gap that didn’t get held up by the wind. Chris Seaver’s RBI triple and Jesse Daniel’s RBI double proved to be the difference for the Indians, who held on for a 3-2 victory in eight innings against the Plattsburg Tigers.

The Russellville Indians will brag about their strength of schedule, and rightfully so. That gives them all the more reason to brag about having a 27-4 record as they begin play in the Class 2 Final Four at U.S. Ballpark in Ozark.

Russellville and Putnam County are separated by 185 miles, but the two baseball programs are already familiar with each other. The Indians will host the Midgets in the Class 2 state quarterfinal round today. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m. at Russellville High School.

The Russellville Indians had good at-bats the first time through the batting order Monday. It just didn’t produce any runs. The second time through the order, the Indians showed why they’re the No. 1 team in the state. Russellville scored four runs in the third inning and tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth to beat the Salisbury Panthers 6-2 in the Class 2 state sectional round.

Whoever coined the phrase “pitchers can’t hit” forgot to relay the message to St. Elizabeth’s Brock Lucas. Lucas went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and pitched a four-hit shutout Thursday, leading the Hornets to a 2-0 win against the Russellville Indians in a pitching-dominated Show-Me Conference matchup.

WARDSVILLE — Not many high school baseball teams have played 10 games by April 1 this spring. The Russellville Indians are in even rarer company, posting their 10th win on just the 15th day of the baseball season.
