The constraints come as the municipality continues to face challenges in water supply, with some areas needing to rely on water tankers due to an increase in demand, leaving levels at water reservoirs critically low.

High water consumption in Johannesburg has been a partial reason that the metro was experiencing water supply issues recently, with the entity saying it was unable to supply water in line with the growing demand.

Parts of the municipality have been experiencing low water pressure, while in other areas taps are completely dry.

Joburg Water has blamed the city’s current water supply challenges on the recent abnormally high consumption by residents.

Population growth in Johannesburg over the past five years from 4 million to 6.5 million without increased capacity of the infrastructure means the city is now playing catch up. 



Joburg Water attributed the shortage to the heatwave experienced across many parts of the Gauteng province in late September and early October.
