Hospitals in Colorado can no longer sue patients under the names of their debt collectors after Gov. Jared Polis signed a new law last week; hospital bill lawsuits.

“They are essentially deliberately using those third-party collection agencies to obscure the fact that they are the ones suing the patients.”

Colorado’s largest hospital system sues thousands of patients, often hiding behind the names of the system's collection agencies. Several other hospitals say they don't use that tactic.

UCHealth lawsuits have hit thousands of patients. A 9NEWS Colorado Sun investigation found the hospital system uses debt collectors to sue, avoiding public scrutiny.

In the last five years, patients have been sued 15,710 times for money owed to UCHealth. Most of those lawsuits were filed in the name of debt collectors working for the hospital system.
