Lotus has been diligently preparing us for its upcoming new horizons by announcing the impending retirement of the Elise, Exige, and Evora – some of them having already been upgraded with proper Final Editions. It has also heralded the upcoming introduction of an all-new sports car series (Type 131), but we certainly didn’t expect the company to dream an EV endurance racer for the 2030 decade.

Lotus has pulled the virtual drapes off its new radical E-R9 concept that attempts to imagine what Le Mans racers will look like in 2030

Lotus has promised big changes as it revamps its entire sports car range, but we weren't quite expecting anything like the new E-R9 all-electric racer.

Lotus is about to start writing a new chapter in its long history, and the plot could include a renewed focus on racing. Developed by Lotus Engineering, the E-R9 is a digital design study that exists only in computer-generated renderings (shown above). Its finished in black and gold, a color scheme chosen as a tribute to the British companys past race cars, and its equipped with a stunningly advanced suite of active aerodynamic add-ons.

Designers say it can be partly driven like a car and partly flown like a fighter jet and features morphing body panels that can change their shape at the touch of a button to increase downforce.

Lotus introduced a concept named E-R9 that shows what an endurance racer might look like in 2030. Its electric and fitted with active aerodynamic parts.
