A 59-year-old male and Oakland resident has been released from an almost two-week mental health hold and arrested after he opened fire on campus earlier this month.

The Berkeley Dance Community is urging campus administration to address safety concerns with outdoor practice spaces on campus, indoor facility accessibility and security following last week’s shooting.

In the span of a few minutes, the atmosphere at UC Berkeley transformed from a typical Friday night into a nightmare punctuated by several gunshots that put campus on lockdown.

The arrest came after numerous students reported hearing three or four shots near the MLK Student Union, according to police and the student newspaper.

One person is in custody and police have secured the area after there were multiple reports of shots fired at Lower Sproul Plaza on campus.
