Matthew Pasek said similar calcium phosphate materials have been created in a lab. But this has never before been found naturally.

A lightning bolt that hit a tree in Florida has paved the way for the creation of an unusual mineral that has never been seen on the planet before.

Lightning invokes chemical reaction in a fulgurite

Pasek examined in a study how high-energy events, such as lightning, can cause unique chemical reactions and, in this instance, result in a new material which is transitional between space minerals and those found on Earth.

In a New Port Richey neighborhood, lightning struck a tree and that's when a USF scientist discovered the strike led to the formation of a new phosphorus material.

A University of South Florida professor discovered that lightning that struck a tree in a New Port Richey area created a new phosphorus material. It was discovered in a rock, the first time in solid form on Earth, and it could be a member of a new mineral group.
