Following a lightning strike to a tree in a New Port Richey neighbourhood in Florida, US, a university professor discovered that the strike led to the formation of a new phosphorus material. The material, found in a rock and in solid form for the first time on Earth, could represent a member of a new mineral group, said the geoscientist Matthew Pasek from University of Florida.

The material is similar to what scientists typically find in meteorites and outer space, but it's the first known instance of it occurring naturally in solid form on Earth.

The violent fingers of electricity that struck a sand dune in Nebraska have left behind a configuration of crystal rarely found in nature.

A type of crystal that breaks the rules of ordinary crystallography has been found in a tube of melted sand from Nebraska.

The natural or random formation of uncanny quasicrystal via extreme temperatures has been discovered recently.

A previously unseen quasicrystal has been found in a sand dune in Nebraska, and researchers think it may have been produced by a lightning strike.

At 5:29 am on the morning of 16 July 1945, in the state of New Mexico, a dreadful slice of history was made.

The work will help reconstruct the history of life on Earth and guide the search for new minerals and deposits, researchers say.
