Just days after being appointed the new sheriff of St. Lucie County by the governor, Keith Pearson has filed the documents Monday to run for sheriff in 2024.
Vice Mayor Shannon Martin, District 3 councilwoman since 2010, as of Monday is the only candidate for mayor, according to the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Office.
Martin becomes acting mayor on Thursday, but because she is running for another office, she must resign from her District 3 seat by July 16. That's also the special-election filing deadline.
The City Council was expected to set the District 3 special election Monday.
While City Council members must live in the district they represent, voters citywide can cast ballots for evevery council seat, no matter the district, according to the city charter.
Three candidates have filed to run for the District 3 seat, according to the Supervisor of Elections: Fritz Alexandre, who lost the District 3 election to Martin in 2018; Anthony Bonna, a former St. Lucie County commissioner; and political newcomer, Jared Greenberg.
