The government has moved the deadline for the phaseout of jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) to the end of the year, following threats of a nationwide transport strike.

The Senate has urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to postpone its planned phaseout of traditional jeepneys by June 30 as transport groups are poised to hold a week-long transport strike to oppose the plan.

Over 50,000 traditional jeepneys have yet to be consolidated and may be taken off the road if operators do not comply with the government’s modernization program until June 30, an official said yesterday.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Boad (LTFRB) has reopened 133 public utility vehicle routes in Metro Manila in time for the resumption of in-person classes on Monday.
