We’re pleased to see plans for private, voluntary and independent nurseries to have access to testing announced in the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. However, the early years are still being largely left out of the conversation and there has been little mention about the impact of the pandemic on young children who are extremely vulnerable to both the short and long-term consequences because of the critical stage they are at in their development.

The opening paragraph of a report by Play England, optimistically entitled “Play after Lockdown” could not be clearer: “One of the most toxic effects to come out of the current pandemic is the destructive impact it has had on children’s play; the spaces they play in, the degree of freedom they experience and their ability to choose what they do and how they do it.”

The panel was united in its belief that understanding local needs is one of the most vital elements in the success of a setting. ‘I think it’s about really getting to know the community, and the children and the families that are in the community,’ said Preeti Patel, head of education at Montessori Centre International (MCI).
