Re-elected ANC provincial chair Oscar Mabuyane said leaders who contested against his slate would not be purged, but the ANC was going to assess the work its deployees had done in the provincial government and take action where necessary. In a conference marred by disputes and which took four days to conclude at the East London ICC, Mabuyane beat Babalo Madikizela by 150 votes after he was voted in by 812 delegates against Madikizela’s 662.
The newly elected Eastern Cape ANC provincial executive committee, inherits an organisation fraught with “stubborn” divisions, with a collapse of organisational discipline and a decline in ethics, values and traditions of the movement. This was the message delivered by newly elected provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi when he tabled his organisational report, behind closed doors, at the rather tense ninth ANC provincial elective conference held in East London over the past four days.
As Mabuyane called Ramaphosa to the podium on Monday night, he emphasised that the president should be given a second term and quipped: “But you must leave after five years, we won’t entertain a third term.”
Lungisa, who contested and lost the provincial treasurer position to Zolile Williams, a municipal manager at Joe Gqabi district, was announced as one of the 30 additional members of the PEC.
