A representative of a coalition group opposing the proposed Carson Valley Meats processing facility has sent a letter to the Carson City Planning Commission, which includes links to 99 documents cited as evidence of the harms of slaughterhouses.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently issued three fines for incidents that stemmed from manure spills or people spreading manure on land without being certified.

The department issued fines of up to $5,000 for several incidents involving manure spills and uncertified manure handlers.

During a routine inspection last November, a DNR environmental specialist, saw that Craig Benjegerdes had been overapplying manure to his fields for years.

Last Thursday, the DNR received an anonymous tip about manure runoff from a field owned by one of the state’s largest feedlots that flowed into a nearby stream.
