Lautoka Hospital consultant anesthetist Dr Mara Vukivukiseru was the first to receive his second dose as he became the first Fijian to be injected with the AstraZeneca vaccine at the Nadi International Airport on 11 March 2021. Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said health officials have started administering the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine this month. Dr Fong in a statement said they are planning to set-up teams for respective sites across the country when they roll out the second dose of vaccination. “This will ensure that all Fijians will be able to access the vaccine without having to travel far or wait too long in queues,” he said.

Fiji’s first recipient of the COVID-19 vaccine is encouraging people to take the shot to reduce the risk of having severe illness and hospitalisation.
Dr Mara Vukivukiseru, a consultant anaesthetist at the Lautoka Hospital, said he had not felt any side effects since receiving the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccination shot on Wednesday March 10, 2021.
“I’m still standing up, I’m still enjoying my meals and still enjoying the company of my colleagues,” he said.

The first 10 frontline workers have received AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccinations at the Nadi International Airport.
This marks the beginning of the vaccination program for Fiji.
The 10 had to be registered before getting the jabs.

Dr Mara Vukivukiseru who is the team leader of the COVID-19 team at the Lautoka Hospital is the first Fijian to be vaccinated.
Minister for Health, Dr Ifiremi Waqainabete, stresses the COVID-19 vaccination program is important and this marks a huge step for the country.
12,000 doses of the drugs arrived on Saturday under the COVAX Facility.
