New Orleans brothers who were once two toddlers sharing a bedroom in Gentilly are now men, one running a courtroom as a criminal court judge, and the other commanding a district as a police captain.

In February, Damon Rideau entered a rare “blind plea” to manslaughter for the fatal shooting of Darren Gallin.

Atkins is set to appear in court again in April. Criminal District Court Judge Marcus DeLarge has to decide if he will recuse himself from the case.

Three years ago, a jury convicted Michael Willis, 51, on a slew of drug-related charges, but it hopelessly hanged when weighing whether Willis was responsible for the second-degree murder of 41-year-old Branden Pelot, who overdosed Jan. 22, 2018 on fentanyl-laced heroin sold by Willis.

Martin Hurtado, 30, is scheduled to be sentenced to 40 years in prison on Oct. 6 for the killing of David Sorenson.

Jason Tillman, who pleaded guilty to negligent injuring, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a felon in an incident that left a New Orleans deputy constable injured, was sentenced to the program on Friday.

"Not a single participant that we’ve had has been re-arrested," Re-Entry Court Judge Marcus DeLarge said.

A half dozen candidates, including two current officeholders, paid their filing fees on Wednesday (Jan. 25) for one School Board and two judicial races. Qualifying continues through Friday, Jan. 27.
