What began as a day of barhopping would end with two dead and questions about who was responsible for the death of the University of Georgia professor.

Her boyfriend, Marcus Lillard, was acquitted in the strange death of Marianne Shockley. Shockley was a respected professor who advocated eating insects to solve world hunger.

In May 2019, University of Georgia entomology professor Marianne Shockley, known lovingly to her students at “Doc Shock,” was found dead on her friend’s pool deck by Baldwin County police.

In 2019, Marianne Shockley was found dead outside a hot tub. Her boyfriend was arrested and another man apparently died by suicide.

Overall, the District Attorney's office has lost almost half of the murder cases they've tried in Baldwin County since Barksdale took office in January 2021

A jury acquitted Marcus Lillard on all four counts relating to the death of Marianne Shockley
