and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm willie geist along with tamron and al. matt's been kind enough to yank himself away from the black jack table to join us. >> i was on a losing streak anyway. the press conference mike tyson had last week was exceptional. he was supposed to talk about his career as a boxing promoter. instead he started talking about his demons. he said he was a vicious alcoholic, that he hated himself and was trying to kill him. it was a stunning public moment even for a guy who's had a number of stunning public moments. i sat down to talk about what appears to be the fight of his life. we'll have that in the next half-hour. back to you. >> we will look forward to that. we'll begin with the breaking news tied to possible military action against syria. we have more from the pentagon. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is clearly a new twist over the tensions between the u.s. and russia over potential u.s. military attacks against syria. the russians announcing that they are sending a guided missile cruiser, the masva, and at least one anti-submarine warship into the eastern med where u.s. warships are floating on standby. at this point u.s. military officials are only calling it interesting and refuse to go so far as to call it provocative. they've point out that the russians normally have but b a dozen warships in the area and that they have their own military naval base there at tartus in syria. they acknowledge that in fact they do have some stake in the game. but as the u.s. military has said repeatedly, they're prepared to send a message to syria. it appears that president putin is sending a message to the u.s. savannah? >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon where it will be very busy today. thank you. also today, the president will be making his case for possible air strikes in syria. chuck todd is nbc's chief political correspondent and has more. >> reporter: today the white house is going to brief congressional leaders about syria and the chemical weapons issue there amid growing concern in congress that they should have a role in deciding about whether the u.s. should strike militarily at bashar al assad's regime. meanwhile, the president says he hasn't made a decision yet even as he starts to make the case as to why a shot across the bow at assad is necessary. president obama who ran for office on ending the iraq and afghanistan wars now admits he's on the verge of ordering a u.s. military strike against syria because of the assad regime's use of chemical weapons. >> i have no interest in any kind of open-ended conflict in syria, but we do have to make sure that when countries break international norms on weapons like chemical weapons that could threaten us that they are held accountable. >> reporter: in that interview with pbs, the president argued that because the assad regime has ties to terrorist organizations, u.s. national security is at stake. >> there is a prospect, a possibility in which chemical weapons that can have devastating effects could be directed at us. >> reporter: as the new cover of "time" out this morning demonstrates, this is a decision the commander in chief of a war-weary nation enters reluctantly. and he's not alone. a growing number of members of congress on both sides of the aisle are calling for a vote to authorize a u.s. attack. republican house speaker john boehner has penned a letter to the president filled with 14 pointed questions including "what result is the administration seeking from its response" and "what is the intended effect of the potential military strikes." to address those concerns the white house will brief congressional leaders today. with u.s. navy ships ready to strike if ordered, the president is emphasizing that any u.s. intervention would be minimal. >> we are saying in a clear and decisive but limited way we send a shout across the bow saying "stop doing this," that can have a positive impact on our national security long term. >> reporter: one goal of the obama administration is to not go it alone in a potential military strike, but they may have to do that. as we found out now, the british parliament is essentially holding up david cameron's plans to join in with the u.s. to do this, and according to senior administration officials here, savannah, whether the u.k.'s in or not, it does not change the u.s. plans. >> all right. chuck todd, thank you very much. let's turn to nbc news senior political analyst, david axelrod, former white house senior adviser. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> we know that congress will be briefed this morning on how the president justifies this action, the intelligence case for it. do you think he needs to make that case in some public forum to explain to the american people why these actions are justified? especially in light of the faulty intelligence that led this country into iraq? >> well, without a doubt. if he makes a decision to go -- and i don't think they'd be having high-level meetings with congress today if some decision hasn't been reached -- he'll have to speak to the american people. i'm sure that he will speak to the american people. this is, though, different from iraq because there's visual evidence that everyone has seen. there's a brad con -- a broad consensus here. i don't think we're facing the same skepticism where there was for iraq where the weapons of mass destruction were used as a justification for an attack. there clearly, something happened here, something dramatic, and the president feels he has to act. >> david, you know this president extremely well. you know him to be a man of caution. particularly when it comes to intervening in conflicts in other countries. i have to ask you, though, is this a case where his caution has backfired? a year ago, every expert said it might have tipped the balance if the u.s. had taken action. even hillary clinton and david petraeus urged him to take action in syria, and he rejected that. did he miss the moment to really make a difference here? >> what he would say is he believes now as he did then that military intervention toward regime change by the united states would not have been the right thing to do. here, he's reacting to a specific act, the use of chemical weapons, and presumably what they do will be to try and knock out the capacity to use them and send a strong message to assad that he can't use these weapons. and he feels that there's a national interest, national security interest because of the relationship between syria and hezbollah and because of the violationf international norms. >> you mentioned sending a message, and that does seem to be the objective is to deter but also to send a message. some have said shouldn't there be a larger strategic goal. is it a mistake to kind of dip your toe into this con >> one expert was quoted saying that's like winning a school yard fight than accomplishing anything of strategic meaning. >> the president said yesterday his view sending a strong message about the use of these weapons is the discreet mission. you point out he is leary about interventions and he ran for president in part on his view that iraq had been a mistake, we had to be more prupt how we? jected military force. he wants to pursue it in that way and not a broader military attack. >> david axelrod, former white house adviser, good to get your perspective. >> there you new developments in the wild fire. >> positive news this morning. good morning. firefighters are starting to make progress on a massive wildfire burning near yosemite national park. the rim fire is about 30% contained. they still have a long way to go. miguel almaguer has the laters. good morning. >> reporter: as this monster fire closes in on 300 square miles firefighters are making progress as you mentioned, containment is up about 30% now, it should be 100% contained to say firefighters should have fire breaks around the perimeter of the fire within two weeks though this fire is continuing to burn, it will burn until first snow until winter. this fire is raging in forest land now. it's feeding on dry brush and wind. some 4,000 firefighters are battling this blaze. they slowed the flames, not the smoke. seen from 100 miles away. poor air quality forced some sco schools to shut down. the fire fight tamron, continues. >> thank you very much. u.s. army major nidal hasan has been sentenced to death. a 13-member court-martial panel deliberated about two hours before reaching that unanimous verdict. hasan was convicted for the murders of 13 people after a 2009 shooting rampage at ft. hood, texas. the sentencing will be appealed. caught on camera a massive land slide in southern china brings traffic to a halt. looked like a waterfall as it cascaded on the busy highway below. the landslide took out part of a communications station. cars lined up for nearly two hours as drivers waited to go around. officials say heavy rain is to blame for with what you are seeing. to wall street, let's check in with courtney reagan. good morning. >> good morning, tamron. investors are weighing speeches, stronger second quarter growth and fewer filings. many believe the strike is eminent. traders are concerned about spill over affecting the supply of oil from neighboring middle eastern countries. tamron. >> all right. thank you. and get ready to meet perhaps the bravest dog on the planet or maybe didn't know better. take a look. this is buford, an alaskan , with no fear. here you can see buford squaring off against an adult polar bear. a news photographer from the affiliate captured this while working on a story about polar bear viewing. those who know the dog believe he was trying to play, never a good idea, or protect territory. also not a good idea when you are outweighed like that. it all worked out. >> you think he is the bravest dog. i think that's the most calm, measured and zen-like polar bear we've seen. >> you don't have to speak loud when you carry a big stick. that's all the bear, carries a big stick. >> you don't want any. >> run along now. >> a check of the weather. >> we had a somber anniversary today. eight years since hurricane katrina, one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes made landfall in louisiana. a category 3 storm caused over 1800 deaths, more than $81 billion in damage. changing that area of louisiana, mississippi, alabama, the gulf coast, forever. and you juxtapose that with the fact this has been a quiet hurricane season. as a matter of fact, the last time we were hurricane-free in august was 2002. hurricane gustav on september 11, 2002. why is it quiet? >> it's a real problem. it's an epidemic. 60 million prescriptions for sleeping pills alone are written. and this survey looked at not just filling prescriptions, but who is using the sleeping pills. what we found is 6% to 7% of people greater than age 50. it tends to be more common in women that are older, educated, and that to me speaks volumes. >> you put those together. women, educated and older. why that combination? >> well, think about it for a second. women have more physiologic challenges. they have the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause. also more access, awareness and access to health care providers. we're finding doctors are still filling out prescriptions like candy and not getting at the root cause. >> something that jumped off the page to me as i read this study, sleep aids used by people who get five hours or less of sleep a night. i get that. also by a great number of people who get nine hours or more a night. what's the deal with that? >> really good insight on your part. less than nine hours sounds intuitive. more than nine speaks to restless sleep. you're not getting good quality sleep. one hour worth of sleep is not enough. you need more and more of it. when you understand how complex sleep is, you have to break down the reasons why someone is not sleeping. there's many, many reasons. if you go to a doctor and just say my sleep is restless, the knee jerk reaction is to write that prescription instead of diving in and finding out why. >> quickly, for all these people who are taking these sleep aids, what do we know about long term effects? >> it can be a problem. they can be addictive. when you try to come off them you can see rebound problems with worsening insomnia. you're at risk for falls, breathing problems and even bizarre behavior. there are simple solutions. there's cognitive behavioral therapy to help you relearn how to sleep. destressing with exercise, mindfulness, medication. and finding a sleep doctor that really can get to the root of the problem in helping you get past it. >> still a lot we don't know about all these pills that are being taken. dr. carol ash, thanks so much. savannah. >> thank you. we have an update now on the 6-year-old boy who survived being swallowed by a sink hole in indiana earlier this summer. he has now been reunited with his rescuers. nbc's john yank has the story. >> nathan weossner returned to michigan city, indiana, in a big way. a ceremony with people he'd never met. 139 police, firefighters and construction and utility workers who rescued him. last month nathan was swallowed up by mt. balldy, a 126 foot sand dune on the shores of lake michigan, falling nearly 14 feet into a sink hole apparently created by a decayed tree. it took more than three hours of frantic digging to get him out. he arrived at the hospital in critical condition. but he was home in just two weeks. they call it the miracle on mt. baldi. wednesday nation's parents expressed their gratitude. >> he is alive because of the diligence and the grace of your hands and by the grace of god. >> we will always be so grateful for what you gave. and you will always be our heroes. >> reporter: those who saved him got awards. nathan got a backpack for school and camouflage pants. the new first grader took it all in stride. but for his rescuers, it was emotional. >> it's a great feeling to know that he's still here and he gets to be a normal 6-year-old boy. >> reporter: a heavy equipment operator recalled skipping his birthday dinner to help. >> it was the best birthday i've had all together. it was a beautiful birthday present. >> reporter: and a beautiful present for nathan and his grateful family. for today, john yang, nbc news, chicago. coming up, the author of a controversial new book claiming princess diana was murdered, speaking out. and valerie harper gives our meredith vieira an inside look at her battle against incurable cancer. >> a lot of stuff that looks impossible is not. and every day there's evidence of it. >> what doctors are telling valerie now. but first, this is "today" on nbc. coming up, matt is in las vegas this morning. has an exclusive interview with mike tyson. it seems to be searingly honest, matt. >> when you sit down with him, you realize he doesn't have a seven second delay. if he thinks it, he says it. on the subject of addiction he says if he doesn't get help, he might not survive. take a look. >> i'm cool. but that's not the life i want to live. i don't want to live that life. eventually it's going to get ugly. i'm going to be ugly. i don't want to live that life. >> that's right. it's a candid, revealing and sometimes even confusing interview with mike tyson coming up in our next half hour, guys. >> see you in a minute, matt. >> he was one of the most fearsome, spectacular athletes of his time. hope he pulls it all together. coming up in a few moments and a little bit later on, i get to catch up with pharrell in the studio. >> back after your local news. ♪ ♪ jay and duke talking action figures. my idea. love it! let's see what i say... roll that beautiful bean footage! the reigning miss teen usa sharing her cautionary tale in an exclusive live interview. >> very scary. we will begin this half hour with matt's exclusive conversation with former heavyweight champ, mike tyson. matt, good morning again. >> mike tyson has never been shy about expressing his feelings and emotions in public. but last week's press conference was candid even by mike's standards. he admitted to falling off the wagon, to having thoughts of suicide and even said he's not sure how much longer he'll be alive. it's clear that whether he's battling an opponent in the ring or demons in his own head, mike tyson pulls no punches. >> when i start drinking and i relapse, i think of dying. i'm in a real dark mood, i think of dying. and i don't know. i don't want to be around no more. >> reporter: mike tyson is known as a brutal competitor. iron mike in the boxing ring. but it was his brutal honesty last week that has people talking. >> i won't survive if i don't get help. >> reporter: turning a press conference that was supposed to be about his first night as a boxing promoter into a public confessional. >> i'm on the verge of dying because i'm a vicious alcoholic. >> reporter: the former heavyweight champion went off script. and into the deepest recesses of his psyche. >> i'm negative. and i'm dark. and i want to do bad stuff. >> reporter: one of the moments of the press conference that struck me, and i watched it a couple of times, you pointed at your head. and you said, it's dangerous to hang out in this neighborhood. alone. >> alone, yes. >> up here, right? it wants to kill everything. it wants to kill me. all i could think of was what a tough way to go through life on a daily basis, kind of fearing what's going on in your own head. >> i'm so happy you don't have to go through that. yeah. it is kind of strange and scary. >> reporter: how long has that been going on? >> i was born that way. >> reporter: during the candid press conference, tyson confessed his latest sins. falling off the wagon. and lying to friends and family about it. >> i've been sober 12 days now. it's tough. i'm mean and irritable. >> reporter: at the press conference it had been six days. you said this is heavy stuff here. i looked at your face as you were saying it. it looked like it was a real challenge for you to get through those six days. >> yeah. it's a real challenge, because i don't like -- i don't know if i like this sober guy. it's hard for me to live normal. straight is hard. >> reporter: tyson's wife kiki is trying to keep him on that straight path. >> when's our anniversary? >> june 10th. no. june -- >> you got the right month. >> i'm sorry. 6th? >> june 6th. >> all right! >> reporter: cameras captured moments from their marriage for the new documentary series "being mike tyson." which also takes him back to his old neighborhood in brooklyn. >> in one scene we go to the school that's right down the street from our old neighborhood. and we go in there, and it reminds me of prison. it's just no -- it's just chaotic. it's no control. people go nuts. the kids are beautiful. you know, and i'm just saying, wow, this is me at one point. i didn't know -- you know, i didn't really think -- >> reporter: you're smiling about it. you didn't seem to mind it too much. >> no. it was fun. i found out a lot about myself. >> reporter: like? >> i'm a very scared young boy. >> reporter: i'm listening to you say that, mike. i'm thinking, this is the guy i watched terrorize opponents in the ring. and he's telling me he's a scared little boy. and it just doesn't make sense. >> i'm very vulnerable, you know. i was very vulnerable. being in brownville, evoking memories. >> reporter: tyson has made amends to many old friends. and even some old foes. >> oh, i'm in the dream day after day. >> reporter: but some things he won't apologize for. i've heard you take responsibility over the years for a lot of bad behavior. i've never heard you talk and say you want to take responsibility or even apologize for what happened with desiree washington. i'm curious if you're at that stage in your life now. >> well, i don't really think i have to make amends to that. because i've done nothing. i really didn't do anything to her. i didn't rape her. i didn't beat her. i didn't do anything to her. and i'm not going to make amends. i made amends to myself. but to her, no. >> reporter: tyson was convicted on rape charges and spent three years in prison. so does that period in your life haunt you? >> not as much as it used to. >> reporter: explain that to me. >> it just doesn't. it really doesn't. it just doesn't no more. i'm at peace with myself pretty much. >> reporter: and he shows it. in the upcoming hbo special "undisputed truth," a recording of the one man show he has performed on stages around the world. in it he shares the advice hetr >> and you remember, mike, be careful how you fight your fight. the way you fight your wife is the way you live your life. >> you said one time one of the things you learned is that to succeed greatly you have to be willing to fail greatly. >> oh, 100%. no one failed more than i did. nobody's seen more than i've seen. i'm the king of the barbarians. there's no one that could pass me in the pain i've endured. >> reporter: that brings up obviously tough memories for you, that pain. >> yeah. that's probably so. but i can deal wit. i can handle it. >> you're going to see a lot more of mike tyson in the coming months. the show premieres on fox sports on september 22nd. he's got a memoir and show on hbo coming in november. this interview went on and on. we'll put the entire thing online on today.com. guys, back to you. >> matt, it's so extraordinary to watch. he's a controversial figure. hated by some. but to see him so raw. how did it strike you? the reigning miss teen usa is sharing her cautionary tale in a live interview. first on the cover story, new details about valerie harper's form of incurable cancer. i spoke with valerie, since then, she's given nbc an inside look at her battle. once again, her amazing spirit was on display. >> we're all going to die but because i have a finite time or have been told so by my doctors, i just want to live every moment to the fullest. >> valerie, right here? >> if you're happy -- >> reporter: actress valerie harper gained fame as television's rhoda. >> hello, get out of my involvement. >> reporter: earlier this year, however she made news for a very different reason when she revealed in "people" magazine that her 2009 doubt with lung cancer had metastasized to the membrane around her brain. >> it is incurable, it is very rare. >> reporter: doctors told her she would likely only have three to six months to live. >> in the beginning i felt terrible, when i first heard the news, i thought, oh, my god, not me. then i thought, why not me? lots of people are stuck with much worse than me. and i am afraid of what's ahead. but so what. there's much to be afraid of in life. >> reporter: in what some might call a brave decision, harper decided to open up her home and her life to nbc's cameras, offering an intimate look at her day-to-day fight for survival. >> my name -- birthday -- valerie harper. august 22nd, 1939. >> that's your chemotherapy. >> okay. >> reporter: harper faced the illness head on undergoing cheaply theory and incorporating eastern techniques like acupuncture and chinese tea. she knows the statistics. the odds are against her, but still she holds out hope. >> spontaneous remission lives as a possibility, do you know what i mean, girlfriend? i mean it. it's there. and i go okay. you know, why does that make you -- >> i don't know. because i think it's a possibility that's beautiful. in every area, a lot of stuff that looks impossible is not. and every day, there's evidence of it. >> reporter: every six weeks an mri gives doctors a chance to see how the cancer is progressing. in june, the tail end of that three to six-month prognosis, harper with her husband by her side undergoes the nerve-racking test. >> i'm not expecting good news. i mean, i can't set myself up to that. we'll just see what it says. i'm a little nervous, to tell the truth. >> reporter: harper's doctor repeals the results and they are astounding. the scans showed a striking improvement in her condition. so if you were assessing val's condition in layman's terms right now, what would you say? >> i'd say we're getting pretty close to remission. >> wow. really? >> yeah. do you think she can beat this? >> it defies the odds. >> it's great to hear. >> problem is, anytime this can change. >> yeah, exactly. it's volatile. >> tomorrow morning something could happen? >> you could get resistance to the therapy. it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. >> is it about buying time and hope that something better comes. >> life is about buying time. >> exactly, that's what i always say. >> reporter: for the woman who believes in infinite impossibility, the m richri res the confirmation of nothing is impossible. for her husband tony they're the unexpected gift. >> it's not curable, there's no question. >> she went from going from three months or less to live. we're into our sixth month and now there's even hope beyond that. i never -- this is overwhelming. >> reporter: for now, valerie harper has her health, but better than that, she has hope. >> wow, our hearts and our hope are with valerie. she is is an inspiration. we should mention you can catch meredith's hour long interview with valerie right here on nbc. and now to the report, could predators secretly be spying on you through your computer's webcam? the newly crowned miss teen usa said it happened to her. we'll speak to her exclusively. but first national correspondent jeff rossen has details. good morning. >> hi, willie. these hackers can hack into your computer, your webcam and even your smartphone remotely. you're in the privacy of your home and watching the most intimate moments. they can even take pictures of you and blackmail you with it. authorities say that's exactly what happened to miss teen usa. this morning, we're showing you how the crooks do it and how you can protect yourself right now. >> you are the new miss teen usa 2013! >> reporter: it was an amazing moment for cassidy wolf grounded miss teen usa. >> congratulations! >> reporter: but it was in her private moment at home where she said she was violated. a stranger hacked into her computer webcam, and without her even knowing took intimate photos of her. >> you would never think somebody would be watching you in your room and this guy had been, so the thought of that was -- it gave me nightmares. >> how did you find out about this? >> i received an anonymous e-mail from an anonymous person who basically was extorting me and blackmailing and attached newt todays of me. >> saying if you don't do this we'll do this? >> correct. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating. you're about to see how easy it is for crooks to do it. we ask the this security expert to set up an experiment. from these teen girls to the entire family at the dinner table. little did they know, thousands of miles away, our expert has broken into their laptops and turned on their webcams. >> people who are victims generally have no idea that they are victims. >> reporter: don't worry, we have the dad's permission, but no one else in the family knew. our expert got if by sending them this innocent looking e-card with a virus. >> they clicked a link in the card. in reality, i loaded a trojan in that computer during that time. >> reporter: giving him full access to the webcam even when it's in sleep mode. you'd have no clue. >> have a seat, thanks for doing this. >> reporter: we told carin, the mom and daughters we came over to do a general story about online security. >> any problems here, anyone hack into your systems at home? >> i don't think so, no. >> reporter: remember, they had no idea days before we'd been spying on them through the webcam. our interview over, we told the girls to go upstairs and wait in their room. then downstairs, we let mom in on the secret. >> we actually recorded your family dinner the other night, no one was in your house except for you guys. >> it's really creepy. i mean, my children are in their computers in the evening in the bedrooms. i'm a little frightened right now for their computer. >> reporter: so we took it up a notch. having our expert hack into the webcam in her daughter's upstairs bedroom where they were waiting with our producer. >> we're watching them live right now inside their bedroom. >> i'm sick over it, actually, i really am. it's very upsetting. >> this time it was our security expert, next time it could be a predator. >> i actually appreciate it. and hopefully i can learn from this and try to avoid this ever happening. >> reporter: for this family, it was just an experiment but for this teen usa, cassidy wolfe, it is a scary reality. >> this happened to me when i was a normal girl in high school, and it can happen to anybody. >> the fbi believes the same criminal who hacked into cassidy's webcam did to half as do dozen other women, do. keep your weapon cam closed or put a piece of tape over the webcam lens. >> with us here exclusively. cassidy, good to see you. >> good morning. >> take me through that first moment that must have been terrifying when you received an e-mail with pictures of yourself. what was your reaction? >> i was terrified. i was screaming, bawling my eyes out. i was on the phone with my mom. i didn't know what to do. >> did you have any sense based on an e-mail address or anything based on who it might have been? >> no, he had used an anonymous e-mail address. >> this part of the reason you're speaking out you're thinking other people might be afraid, not tell the police. you have a message for them? >> right. the message is to tell somebody. the longer it goes on, the worse it will get. if you can get the word out, talk to the authorities, it will already help you get the word out and talk to somebody. >> and you have talked to already, other women, who have had these problems. i don't think you'll hear a lot about it in the press. perhaps they'll put a face to it now. >> right, i wasn't the only victim. i'm sure it happened to thousands of people but there have been 12 people linked into the case with me as well. being miss teen usa, i can get the word out. it happened to me when i was a normal girl and it can happen to everybody. >> i know you can't say a lot about it because the case is ongoing. the fbi is investigating and looks like they're close to find ought who did this. >> i sure hope so. >> were there any red flags in the months before, before you received the e-mail? >> no, it was the night i received the e-mail, my facebook notified me that someone attempted to login. my twitter instagram started to act a little slow. so when i received the e-mail, it all came together and made sense. >> this was before you were miss teen usa, but you were miss teen california, right? >> yes, i was miss california teen. but it seems as though it could have been happening prior to that as well. >> you can look at it in a positive sense now you have the flat form a platform but now you have the experience to turn to others? get the new eastern span open by the end of labor day weekend. here is a live look at that bay bridge toll plaza this morning, used to seeing people lined up in cars there. nope, all construction crews as they are trying to get the new span all up and ready. so we will keep our eyes on that crews meantime working hard to keep the massive rim fire in yosemite from spreading. the latest update from crews on the ground has the fire now at nearly 193,000 acres. the good news, it only grew by 300 acres overnight. wildfire now roughly the size of new york city. firefighters have the fire 30% contained, more than 5500 struck slurs still threatened, including thousands of homes. a special tribute is planned today for the danville teenager who died the day before he was set to start his senior year of high school. students and staff at san ramon valley and several other nearby high schools are wearing green today to remember 17-year-old robert orlando. tributes are also being posted on twitter as many friends and classmates are sharing memories of him. orlando was killed monday night when the car he was in crashed into a tree. we are going to have a look at the morning commute
