Iloilo City notes drop in dengue cases

DOWNWARD TREND. The graph shows the downward trend of dengue cases in Iloilo City as reflected by the blue line. While the cases from January to Sept. 17, 2022 are still over 200 percent compared to the 2021 data covering the same period, it is far from being alarming, according to Dr. Marigold Calsas, head of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Office in a press conference on Tuesday (Sept. 20).(Photo screen grab from virtual press conference) ILOILO CITY - Dengue cases in Iloilo City are already on a downward trend with 913 cases, including two deaths, as of Sept. 17. However, the number of cases is still higher by 209 percent compared to the incidents for the same period last year. "For now our dengue has not reached the alert threshold nor the epidemic threshold that's why our cases although it's higher when compared last year is not that alarming for us to declare an outbreak," said Dr. Marigold Calsas, head of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Office. In a press conference on Tuesday, Calsas said of the total number of cases, four are confirmed, 569 are probable or those that have positive laboratory tests for dengue, and 340 are suspect or those that show symptoms such as fever and rashes but have no laboratory tests. "We are now on a downward trend as we have already plateaued at 20 cases (per) day for the last seven days," she added. Medical Officer IV Roland Jay Fortuna, in the same press conference, said that while there is no need for alarm, the anti-dengue campaign has to continue to sustain the declining trend. The latest death recorded was a 10-month-old male from Bolilao, Mandurriao who died on July 26, 2022. While cases were from six months to 75 years old, the most affected were from the one year to 10 years old age group. The city has been keeping a close watch on dengue cases, taking into consideration the increase in cases every three years. The last time Iloilo City recorded its highest number of cases was in 2019 with 3,345 and 16 deaths. In 2020 it has 255 cases with two deaths, and 343 cases with no fatality in 2021. (PNA) }

RECOVERY. Over 90 percent of acute gastroenteritis cases in Iloilo City have recovered. CESU medical coordinator, Dr. Marigold Calsas, urged those who are still suffering from the disease to submit to the rectal swab since the city health office is aiming to document or confirm cholera cases. (PNA photo screen grab from virtual press conference) ILOILO CITY - The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) of the City Health Office (CHO) here has reported a 92 percent recovery rate out of its 607 acute gastroenteritis cases as of Sept. 18. CESU medical coordinator, Dr. Marigold Calsas, in a press conference on Monday, said 39 active cases remain, with the addition of three new cases over the weekend -- 14 are still admitted and 25 are being managed at home. "We have no additional confirmed cholera case but we still have 21 pending rectal swab results that was sent last week to the RITM (Research Institute for Tropical Medicine)," she added. The results are expected within this week. There was additional one death, bringing the total fatalities to 12. Even with the high recoveries, Calsas said that still they could not say that the number of cases has dropped since new ones were recorded over the weekend. She said there could be underreporting as surveillance is not active during weekends and reports from hospitals have yet to be tallied. She urged those who are still suffering from acute gastroenteritis to submit to the rectal swab since the city health office is aiming to document or confirm cholera cases. "They need to be reported for immediate action and control measures to contain the infection. That is a weekly reportable disease," she added. (PNA) }

Iloilo City logs 1 gastro death, 26 more cases

MEDICAL REPORT. City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit medical coordinator, Dr. Marigold Calsas, presents the update on acute gastroenteritis in Iloilo City in a press conference on Wednesday (Sept. 7, 2022). Cases of acute gastroenteritis have increased to 419 while cholera recorded 12 incidents.(Photo screen grab from virtual press conference) ILOILO CITY - Acute gastroenteritis cases here have reached 419 with the reported 26 new cases while the number of death now stands at 10 as of Wednesday, according to the Iloilo City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Office (CESU-CHO). "We have 319 recoveries (acute gastroenteritis), 55 cases admitted, 41 cases stayed at home and 10 deaths as of today. We have an additional death, which is a seven-month old from Gustilo, La Paz," said CESU medical coordinator, Dr. Marigold Calsas in a press conference. Of the total cases, 12 have been identified as cholera with three of the patients still in hospitals. Two of the four latest confirmed cholera cases in Iloilo City were from Barangay Tanza Esperanza and one each from North Baluarte and Bolilao. The four were among the six cases who tested positive for cholera as per results released by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine Tuesday evening, Calsas said. Meantime, Iloilo Provincial Health Officer Dr. Maria Socorro Quinon on Tuesday afternoon said they are also investigating the 13 cases of suspected acute gastroenteritis in the province. The cases were from the municipalities of Pavia, Pototan, San Joaquin, Dingle, Oton, and Leganes. Quinon warned that cholera, a common cause of gastroenteritis, is fatal and may result in death within two to three hours when left untreated. She advised the public to immediately seek medical help when members of their family are suffering from loose bowel movement five to six times a day for emergency treatment. (PNA) }

Iloilo City acute gastro patients log 74% recovery rate

CLOSED. A closure order is served on a water refilling station in Iloilo City for operating without business and sanitary permits. The local government has ordered the closure of water refilling stations with no permits following the acute gastroenteritis and cholera outbreak in the city.(Photo courtesy of Iloilo City Investment Services Business Permits and Licensing Division) ILOILO CITY - The City Health Office (CHO) on Tuesday said 292 or 74 percent of its 393 cases of acute gastroenteritis have recovered. In a press conference, Dr. Marigold Calsas, medical coordinator of the Iloilo City Epidemiology and Surveillance Office, said 39 more cases were recorded on Sept. 5 bringing the total to 393. However, no new cholera or new death was recorded. Deaths still stand at nine, while 60 remain admitted and 32 are still recuperating at home. "So far all the nine districts are still affected, however. There is an increase in Arevalo district with 11 new cases; Sto. Rosario, one; two for Tanza district; Jaro 1 has seven new cases; Jaro 2 has three cases; La Paz additional two; Lapuz, two cases; and Molo has seven new cases," she said. CHO Medical Officer IV Roland Jay Fortuna said the increase in cases could be attributed to the intensified monitoring of their district health centers. Before they can have their check-up in hospitals, the city medical staff has monitored and listed the cases in the barangay. While the city has found city residents cooperative in providing information about those symptomatic of the disease and their water source, the challenge is for those who could not afford hospitalization to be hydrated. "Once we open our hydration units then we already have a place to accommodate those who need to by hydrated," Fortuna said. He added that they have already placed the purchase request for the needed medicines while applications for the needed human resource are already coming in. "Once complete, as soon as possible we will open it," Fortuna said. Meantime, the CHO through district health centers has already inspected 13,505 deep wells, with 1,164 already chlorinated and 43 recommended to be condemned. The city's compliance team will be helping the CHO in the inspection of deep wells to determine if they have been chlorinated while water refilling stations will have to be verified if they have business and sanitary permits. Fortuna added that 11 of the 21 water refilling stations recommended for closure on Monday were inspected. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas also issued a directive on Sept. 1 requiring all water refilling stations in the city to submit to mandatory water potability testing from laboratories accredited by the Department of Health. 8 die of acute gastro in Iloilo City

ACUTE GASTROENTERITIS. The case status of the acute gastroenteritis in Iloilo City as of Aug. 31, 2022. The City Health Office said Thursday (Sept. 1, 2022) there is still a possibility that the number of cases would increase as active case monitoring continues. (PNA photo screenshot from CHO presentation) ILOILO CITY - The acute gastroenteritis outbreak here has already claimed eight lives as of August 31, the City Health Office (CHO) reported Thursday. "From 125 cases last August 30, we have an additional 103 cases for August 31. So that's a total of 228 as of August 31. We are still receiving reports for September 1," Dr. Marigold Calsas, medical coordinator of the Iloilo City Epidemiology and Surveillance Office, said in a press conference. The deaths included a four-month-old girl from Timawa Tanza II, an 11-month-old girl from Sto. Rosario-Duran, a two-year-old boy from Rizal Palapala I, a five-year-old boy from Zone 6B Molo Boulevard, an eight-year-old girl from Zone 6 Calumpang, a 31-year-old man from Zone 3 Sagasa in Hibao-an Norte, and a 63-year-old woman from Maria Clara. The other death was recorded back in March, based on information from the Iloilo City Epidemiology and Surveillance Office. A total of 53 patients are in hospitals, 115 have recovered, and 52 are active cases but are not confined in hospitals, she added. Eight cases were confirmed as cholera based on the result of the rectal swab that was sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. The city government has already ordered the closure of deep wells that were found positive for coliform and E. coli while water refilling stations that were randomly tested and found to be positive for the bacteria will be subjected to confirmatory tests as cases of acute gastroenteritis (AGE). "When the water is positive for coliform, that means there is a risk that it is contaminated. It's like a signal. If it is positive for E-coli, definitely the water is contaminated," CHO officer in charge Annabelle Tang said in the same press conference. Tang said the city government has provided the affected areas with a static tank and coordinated with the Metro Pacific Iloilo Water for the provision of safe water. Over the weekend, bottled waters were also procured while the static tank was not yet available. Dr. Roland Fortuna, also of the CHO, said of the 32 water-refilling stations that were randomly tested, four tested positive for E. coli and coliform and 14 have coliform bacteria. Of the 55 deep wells that were tested, 39 tested positive for E. coli and coliform and 15 have coliform bacteria. Fortuna said all deep wells that have been closed would be chlorinated. He added that they also intend to disinfect with chlorine other deep wells in the city that are not in areas with cases of AGE, but for now, priority would be given to those with clustering of cases. Based on the initial inventory of the CHO sanitary division, the city has nearly 20,000 deep wells although this is still subject to verification. Mayor Jerry Trenas also issued Executive Order 054 on Thursday, requiring all water-refilling stations in the city to submit to mandatory water potability testing through accredited laboratories. "Due to the rapid increase in AGE cases, there is a need to revisit and heighten the sanitary measures, particularly with all the water-refilling stations in the city," the EO said. The CHO noted that there is still a possibility that the number of cases would rise as they carry out active monitoring. (PNA) }

Iloilo City eyes state of calamity due to gastroenteritis

WATERBORNE DISEASES. The condition of the water source of houses where cases of acute gastroenteritis were recorded in Iloilo City. Of the 90 cases of acute gastroenteritis, three were confirmed cholera cases, while 14 are waiting for the results of their laboratory tests from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.(Photo grab from CHO update) ILOILO CITY - The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) has recommended placing Iloilo City under a state of calamity due to food and waterborne diseases in response to the increasing cases of acute gastroenteritis. The CDRRMC passed a resolution during their special emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon while Mayor Jerry P. Trenas requested the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to hold a special session on Sept. 1 to approve the declaration. The CDRRMC has identified some PHP12 million from the quick response fund for medical personnel, supplies, medicines, fuel, and other maintenance and operating expenses once the state of calamity is declared. The City Health Office (CHO), in a press conference morning on the same day, said acute gastroenteritis cases recorded in Iloilo City's 31 barangays reached 90 from July 26 to Aug. 28. "The city recently recorded increasing cases of acute gastroenteritis, which is a state that occurs when food or water that is contaminated is consumed," Dr. Marigold Calsas, medical coordinator of the Iloilo City Epidemiology and Surveillance Office, said in the morning press conference. Three are confirmed cholera cases but have already recovered while 14 are waiting for the results of their specimen from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. Further, of the 90 cases, four have died while 18 others are still in hospitals. The deaths were an eight-year-old female from Barangay Calumpang, a two-year-old girl from Rizal Pala Pala I, a four-month-old girl from Tanza Timawa 2, and a 31-year-old male from Hibaoan Norte. "For the past five years we have no case of cholera," said CHO officer-in-charge Dr. Annabelle Tang,. She added that reports of possible cases were still being received. The CHO Environmental Health and Sanitation Division already collected water samples from deep well, shallow tube well, water vending stations, refilling stations, and bathhouses in selected barangays where there are cases namely for a rapid test. The test showed that more or less 17 deep wells were positive for coliform and more or less 11 have e-coli contamination. Health staff has been ordered to look into the sanitary permit and result of the laboratory result of water refilling stations to determine whether they are selling potable water. Tang said that as preparation they will be opening the city's modular hospital to serve as a hydration unit for mild cases. She urged that cleanliness be observed at all times and wastes should be disposed of properly. Water should be boiled and food should be cooked well. "We would like everyone to be more vigilant, especially now that it is rainy season. Waterborne diseases are rampant or very high," she added. The total coliform counts give a general indication of the sanitary condition of a water supply while the E.coli is the best indicator of fecal pollution, according to the New York State Department of Health website. 22 med students in Iloilo tested Covid-positive

INFECTED. Some 22 senior medical students of the Iloilo Doctors College tested positive for the Covid-19 virus based on the data from the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Office. The cases are under strict quarantine either in their homes or boarding houses.(Anadolu file photo) ILOILO CITY - Twenty-two senior medical students of the Iloilo Doctors College (IDC), including an index case, were found positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) and are on strict quarantine in their homes or boarding houses. Dr. Marigold Calsas of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) of the City Health Office (CHO) said on Friday they could not yet say if the transmission has been contained but the school has been carrying out mitigation measures. IDC intends to subject to a repeat swab those exposed, Calsas said in an interview. "We have individual tracing and individual advises but the school supervises them so the school manages them depending on their protocol," she said. The index case was the classmate of those infected, who first showed symptoms before their June 8-9 practical examinations. The student went home to Antique on June 9 after getting a positive result of the antigen test and subsequently confirmed by a swab test. Calsas said that there were 94 of them in a class who were divided into four teams for their group study before their practical exams. The group of the index case immediately submitted to swab test on June 12 where 11 of them, who already showed symptoms, were found positive. The following day all those exposed to the positive cases were placed in quarantine for observation. A test result released on June 15 showed additional 10 positive cases but all asymptomatic. Others were negative but Calsas said that they could no longer trace since the school identifies who will be subjected to the swab test. There is no fear of infecting patients as the students were quarantined and subjected to the swab test before they were deployed for hospital duty, she added. The affected medical students were also fully vaccinated against Covid-19. She said other Iloilo medical schools also experienced transmissions before but were contained. Calsas, however, lamented that while others have realized their social responsibility once they are infected, it is ironic that those in the medical field self-medicate, take antigen tests, go on duty while experiencing symptoms, and will report to authorities only if they are already feeling well.
