As we mark the 19th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day , the call to make Holocaust teaching “obligatory” in Canadian public schools has risen to fever

In a move motivated by discussions with concerned Jewish students, the Manitoba government is looking to make Holocaust education more prominent in classrooms. The announcement was made Tuesday as part of the Speech from the Throne and was welcomed by community members.

Advocates have long called for Holocaust education to be mandatory for Canadian students. As Ontario and British Columbia embed this learning in the curriculum, others are still waiting for a similar commitment in their provinces.
