Christian Brueckner, 45, was named last year by prosecutors as the key suspect in the disappearance and murder of the three-year-old in 2007.

Christian Brueckner visited the Arade dam of the Barragem do Arade reservoir, possibly with others, shortly after the toddler vanished from her bed in May 2007, a former friend has told police.

There was no immediate information made available by the other force, the Policia Judiciaria, but the move likely signals an end to the operation, which started on Tuesday, in the next few hours

Police are desperate to find the video camera as they believe it may contain images of Madeleine, but also of other sex attacks Brueckner is said to have carried out on at least two unidentified women.

Police have combed the banks of a reservoir in Portugal with the help of sniffer dogs, rakes and pickaxes as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The first major search for the British toddler in nine years comes after German police discovered photos of Brueckner at his self-described little paradise in the Portuguese region, it is understood.

Officers are scouring the Arade reservoir, around 30 miles from where the three-year-old went missing in 2007
