NASA announced Monday it has awarded additional funding to develop spacesuits for low-Earth orbit in addition to moonwalking under the Artemis program.

NASA is expanding its options for spacewalking suits in low Earth orbit and moonwalking suits for Artemis missions with task orders from Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace.

The space agency awarded task orders to Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to build on the existing designs of their in-development spacesuits.

NASA has asked two of its commercial partners to develop spacesuit designs for different tasks than the ones initially assigned to them, with the space agency looking to have backup options should any issues arise in the future.

Later this decade, humans will stand on the lunar surface once more. The suits they will wear will be far more advanced than those of the Apollo astronauts.

NASAs Artemis III mission will put humans back on the surface of the Moon for the first time in over 50 years, thanks in part to these AxEMU spacesuits.
