A proposed senior-living complex that caused rancor and hard feelings for just about the current Highland Town Council’s entire term can officially break ground.

While Highland residents rejected the School Town’s referendum, they seem ready to replace a council that’s been marred by rancor for most of this term.

Highland residents are poised for a lively general election this year with Democratic and Republican candidates competing in every race on the ballot.

Marsha Novak, chair for the Highland Democratic Party, died the morning of April 8 from complications of a long illness. She was 71.

Highland residents may soon see their Gazebo Express newsletter shrink to one page, among other changes, as the Town Council looks to save money on its cost.

The deadline for candidates for remove their names from May’s primary ballot came and went with little fanfare at noon Friday.

A dozen Lake County candidates are being challenged and face possible removal Feb. 21 by the county election board if they are found to have violated state election laws.

More than 160 Democrats and Republicans have filed in the first week and a half of the filing period, which ends Feb. 3.

A public hearing has been set for Dec. 12.

After the council adopts the proposed numbers, they will be submitted to the Department of Local Government Finance, which typically will finalize the proposal lower than presented.
