Photo  -   Grease Rag Yarns As the Footplate Padre I attest this article is a railway whinge, but a fair one and I still dont know to whom I should write a letter of complaint. I set the scene as this is important, to get the full impact of the story. Some time ago my wife Delma and I were packing the 2000 model dual cab Holden Rodeo for our road trip from Tweed Heads to Laguna Quays (Whitsundays) to set up the Basil Sellers Laguna Quays Respite facility. This is the third such facility tha...

Photo  -   A walk bridge  "Counting your chickens before theyve hatched" is as true today as it has always been, as even explained in the Bible. The Online Idiom Dictionary explains it as "Dont make future plans on something that has not yet happened" and provides several similar idioms such as "Jumping the gun". Sometimes it takes more than one astonishing event to convince someone of truth, and this was such a situation for Ahab, King of Israel. The Bible gives the following background: ...

Photo  -    Powerful imagery of a lighthouse The Sydney Morning Heralds published an article titled "Leaders behaving badly", which listed well publicised international and Australian examples along with anecdotal illustrations. The list includes politicians and business leaders. The article rightly quotes a number of authorities as to why leaders might behave badly. These are listed as egotistical and narcissist and on the other hand explain how temperance and prudence should be a hallmar...

Photo  -   An unfinished car port There have been numerous legal proceedings associated with alleged physical abuse, substance abuse and illegal betting linked to the sporting field, all presumably when rules of a particular sport have been breached in some way. Moreover these are associated with, when someone gets injured, loses unfairly or is subject to outside pressures to cheat in some way. This has given him reason to reflect that whatever happens on a sporting field, wont inevitably s...

2021 sees new directions The major 2021 feature in these new directions sees the “18-30 years and Over 31s” in both the Kiwis and Internationals have become separate to Press Service International. Photo  -   Cartia Moore 2020 Aust young writer Basil Sellers Award  This means that after three years of Stand Alone for the 18-30 and Over 31s, Kiwis and Internationals, now they have taken responsibility for themselves. In both cases they have senior writers from their own ilk who serve as...

Photo  -    An empty Marina There are parallels between parents barracking for their kids from the sidelines, and parishioners who have all the answers (solutions) but are unwilling to take responsibility of putting them into practise. Every Christian leader faces the scenario where members of their congregation or association offer their tuppence worth of advice, sometimes couched in terms more like a directive. It is often these same people who are just not there when there is hands-on w...

Proverbs chapter 16 verse 33 " The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord." (KJV), or, otherwise expressed in the New Living Translation "We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall". Photo  -    Sea Rescue – theological reflections I was interested in the theological viewpoint from this Proverbs verse, as it challenges the readers to accept the authority of Scripture in all of their life practices and also in their hearts and their thi...

Photo  -   Tronson du Coudray art “Thriftiness” Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge, wife of Prince William and affectionately known as Kate, has several times been photographed wearing the same outfit that she has worn previously. The public may want a royal fashion clothes horse, but Kate told a friend: "Times are tough - I cannot be expected to wear a new outfit for every royal engagement. I am not a fashion model." Moreover she is acutely aware of the current economic climate. The Lo...

Photo  -    Mark Tronson – Paranoid Pop ‘Paranoid Pop’ is the "fun and games name" my son gives whenever I expresses some caution over a seemingly everyday decision. That "reflection" is part of who I am. I have always reflected on decisions and thought about them carefully and thoughtfully; sometimes too much, and at times too little. My wife, Delma, is also a careful thinker and has given due consideration to family discussions and subsequent decisions all our lives. This has stood...
