Lee Breuer and Bob Telson's 'The Gospel at Colonus,' a reworking of Sophocles' 'Oedipus at Colonus' with gospel music, opens at the Getty Villa's Outdoor Theater in a co-production with Chicago's Court Theatre.

In an exciting move, Court Theatres groundbreaking production of “The Gospel at Colonus” is being remounted next month at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California.

“The Gospel at Colonus” is based on “Oedipus at Colonus,” Sophocles’ 2,500-year-old play about an aging king who seeks redemption after a life of sin. The revival just opened at Court Theatre in Hyde Park.

Court has put up something with an expansive vision and a directorial approach that respects the material but gently improves upon it.

While the ‘Oedipus’ adaptation sometimes struggles to clarify what is sermon and what is Sophocles, the songs stir up plenty of joy.
