A Maine man who lied on multiple applications for pandemic relief funds is going to prison and ordered to pay over $1 million.

PORTLAND — A local man who stole more than $1 million from the pandemic-era paycheck protection program was sentenced Wednesday Oct. 4 to 18 months in prison.

With some of the money he made a down payment on a sailboat, which he then claimed was itself a business in an attempt to get more PPP money.

PORTLAND -- The federal government is asking that a Rockport man who stole more than $1 million from the pandemic-era paycheck protection program serve 37 months in prison.

The complaint alleged that in July 2020, Jacob Hennie illegally received two pandemic-era Paycheck Protection Program loans and an emergency advance loan.

Government has tried to lessen the financial toll of the pandemic, with generally positive results. But we still need to scrutinize how it's done.
