A recently rediscovered oil sketch by renowned 19th century landscape painter John Constable nearly fetched a quarter-million at auction.

The 1814 oil sketch, last recorded in 1979, depicts Willy Lott’s Cottage in Flatford, Suffolk and was rediscovered hanging in a dark corner of a dining room in Guernsey

The sketch, from June 1814, features Willy Lotts House in Flatford, Suffolk - the subject of several of Constables paintings and most notably The Hay Wain.

The oil sketch was rediscovered in a private collection in Guernsey and will be put up for auction.
