MIT scientists find the sounds beneath our feet are fingerprints of rock stability.

In a Climate Grand Challenge proposal called the Advanced Carbon Mineralization Initiative, MIT Assistant Professor Matej Pec studies different ways that can make rock mineralization more effective at capturing carbon and storing it underground.

New research finds the low-viscosity, rate-strengthening properties of rock nanocrystals may influence fault zone instability, offering a new explanation for earthquake formation both in Earth’s crust and deep in subduction zones.
