The athletics facility on the University of Central Missouri campus that has been described by the friends and family of longtime athletic director Jerry Hughes’ as his second home will now forever remind visitors of his impact on the campus community and beyond following a renaming ceremony on Feb. 17 that posthumously honored Hughes and his service to UCM.
Citing factors that include an overall increase of approximately 10% in fall student enrollment, an operating budget that is 5.25% larger than the previous fiscal year, and a strategic plan that guides the institution, the University of Central Missouri is in a position of strength. That is the message President Roger Best shared with faculty and staff when he presented his annual State of the University remarks on Sept. 14. The president’s sixth consecutive SOU address since his 2018 appointment by the Board of Governors took place in the James L. Highlander Theatre.

He devoted countless hours at the institution’s main indoor sports arena watching the growth of thousands of student athletes, the building of regional and national championship athletics teams, and the countless celebrations that came with the home-teams’ successes. Although Hughes passed away on Jan. 21, 2023 while he was serving as Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, his professional legacy will live on with the Multipurpose Building being renamed the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center.
Demonstrating his commitment to strong academics and opportunities for student-athletes, University of Central Missouri President Roger Best is in a good position to share his passion for both, not only through his position at UCM, but also as the new chair of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) CEO Council. Best was elected to the two-year post that began July 1, 2023, adding yet another leadership role to a career that has already had an impact on college athletes.
