The latest numbers from ECHO put Austin's homeless count at roughly 6,683, with 1,153 currently sheltered and 5,530 currently unsheltered.

The goal is to provide more space for homeless residents who may be displaced by upcoming construction on I-35.

TxDOT says the property is roughly seven acres of land, previously owned by a private group. That land could nearly double the amount of property at the emergency non-congregate shelter site. But the groups are still in the very early planning stages.

The expansion is meant to offset the displacement of people experiencing homelessness who reside under or near Interstate 35.

Some homeless residents stayed outside as temperatures plunged. Some had cognitive or mental health issues that stood in the way of getting help.

A Facebook fundraiser for The Other Ones Foundation has raised over $30,000 to help house Austin's homeless population after Proposition B passed.
