Astronomers find a new asteroid sharing earth’s orbit

The 0.75-mile-wide Trojan asteroid is only the second to be discovered in Earths path around the sun—and is more than three times the size of the first one identified.

The Trojan asteroid 2020 XL5, which follows the same path around the sun as our planet, was revealed only after a decade of searching.

A lone asteroid is scouting ahead of Earth's orbit. It's the largest Trojan found in Earth's system thus far.

The asteroids have sandwiched Jupiter in its orbit, and could tell scientists about the very early stages of the solar system.
