A severe thunderstorm with strong winds, nickel size hail and heavy rain rolled through Ottawa Friday afternoon, damaging dozens of trees and knocking out power to several neighbourhoods.

Hydro Ottawa says it is treating Fridays storm as a "multi-day restoration event" after power was knocked out to thousands of customers across the city.

"It is important to close Gillies Grove until an arborist can inspect all the damage, clear debris from the trails and confirm hazard trees have been dealt with."

A City of Ottawa official said collecting or chipping all the debris from damaged trees and brush would require a "multi-week" operation.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada had filed an unfair labour practice complaint against the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.

About 114,000 Hydro-Quebec clients remain without power after Wednesdays storm.
