The 18-year-old girl who was beaten on a SEPTA subway Wednesday was trying to defend another group of young people she didn’t know, her family said Friday.

The family says the young woman who stood up to girls pummeling Asian American students on a SEPTA train didn’t know the victims, or the alleged attackers but understood courage.

The 18-year-old, who was trying to stop others from being bullied, has been released from the hospital.
