"The investment that the mayor was laser-focused on, (was) in the neighborhoods," said Ray Solomon, City of Detroit, Department of Neighborhoods. "He was laser-focused on blight, illegal dumping opening abandoned houses."

More than 97% of homes rose in property value from the year before, with the highest increases reaching up to 40%. Six of the Detroits 209 neighborhoods saw declines in property values.

But as proposed assessment changes go out to almost 400,000 Detroiters - there are bound to be a lot of questions about how to read it - and what it means - for property taxes.

Property values in Detroit were up 31 percent on average, rising in all but five neighborhoods, as they have nearly returned to levels not seen in a decade. Residential values rose to an expected $4.83 billion in 2021, nearly as high as their 2012 value of $4.85 billion. In announcing the jump…
