On Dec. 14, Jackie Hegarty of Newtown, Connecticut, knows her phone will be "flooded" with messages, as it is each year on that day, the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting. The new comedy "Webster's Bitch" at Playhouse on Park could use some sharper definition but a lot of the workplace comedy works just fine.

Paula Vogel's "Indecent," at Playhouse on Park through Feb. 26, remains an important play about art, politics and religion, enlivened by klezmer music, a melodramatic play-within-a-play and some vaudeville showtunes.

Playhouse on Park's production of August Wilson's "Fences" honors the text but has some weaknesses. The show runs through Nov. 20 in West Hartford.

"Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" gives a balanced musical and dramatic portrayal of jazz legend Billie Holiday late in her career. Playhouse on Park's production of Lanie Robertson's well-known play, which has been around since the 1980s, stars Danielle Herbert as Holiday and Nygel D. Robinson as her longsuffering accompanist and is directed by Stephanie Pope Lofgren. It runs through Oct. 16.

An earthy, energetic "Pippin" at West Hartford's Playhouse on Park through Aug. 21 injects a sense of erotic mystery to the 1972 Stephen Schwartz musical that calls to mind some of the theater's homegrown cabaret revues. The effect is astounding.
