messaging? i think it s a part of the challenge and something they pushed back open. i believe they can when they can make this messaging they believe very clear, but, obviously, just looking at the infrastructure agenda, we don t even know what s exactly going to be in it. out of it. when he makes those remarks, he has to walk a very fine line. that s something they are very aware of. just friday, he was talking all about the child tax credit and wanting to have it extended and talking about child care. he had to compromise on, free community college, that s something that has been in almost every joe biden speech as candidate and president in the last few years, first lady dr. jill biden talks about it all the time. now that looks to be stripped of it as well. that s a messaging perspective. one they would challenge by saying we re doing the best we k. again they point to polling that shows these proposals are
to go and the vice president is here for multiple reasons. one, of course, is that el paso is where the trump administration began their family separation policy and from a messaging perspective, they see this as an important place to come as they tried to establish in their words a fair and humane immigration process. republicans have criticized them and the vice president specifically for not going to the rio grand valley as part of the border and they re at a much higher level and you hear progressives and other democrats critizing the administration for not moving fast enough to get to that humane system including back that title 42 policy, the trump-era cdc order that is expelling people on the grounds of public health and putting them into danger if you talk to advocates and that still exists today. there is a lot for the vice president to see and a lot to learn while she is here and still a lot of change to be made from the era of the trump
forward on the debate, we ll take up his proposed substitute amendment. access to early voting by mail-in voting. also early voting and putting those voter id requirements in there. there was a lot of push and pull about that between the democrats and republicans as well. but, again, the big news right now is that joe manchin will vote for this. that gets the democrats to 50. that was the best case scenario for them going into this. they will not get the 60 to move forward, but they will be able to say they were unified. that s good for them, they say, politically and also have a messaging perspective. to be clear, we don t think it changes the outcome of the bill. right. but it does it will open debate. it won t open debate. it will just allow the democrats democrats to say they were unified in wanting to open the gates. understood. you re right. because this vote is about whether or not to open debate.
from a messaging perspective, how do democrats deal with this? they must understand that the objective of the campaign by trump and his allies is to create confusion. confusion in the general public because everyday folks aren t watching a ton of tv. they aren t watching the hearings from hour to hour. they are getting sound bytes here and there. so republicans are trying to create confusion. what democrats need to do is have a simple and sharp and coherent message about what trump did and why it rises to being impeachable offense. and i think actually they did a really good job of that throughout thisn the intelligence committee led by adam schiff. i think nancy pelosi was wise to trust him with this process. they ve kept on the ball, dan goldman has done an excellent job of asking questions and laying out this case that is pretty clear that the president abused his power. he asked for a favor in return for myrtlery aid. and i think the more they can just stay on that message when
until, you know, very, very late at night. he s doing just fine. the problem is, and i will put on my hat here as an nbc white house correspondent. this white house has burned its credibility on matters big and small. and so when you have an issue as critical as the president s health, you can t take her word at face value. it was unusual how it happened. the press pool accompanied the president to walter reed, which was normal. the pool goes with the president and presidents before president trump, wherever they go in town or out of town. it s unusual from a messaging perspective. i mean, they could have honestly just said he was going to meet and visit with wounded troops there because he ended up doing that, at least one. but they gave sort of this statement about half of a physical which doesn t really make sense which is why so many questions have been asked. my thanks to jeff mason,
