other over the next couple of days. live with me now is michael cramer. he s the town manager for carolina beach. carolina beach is about 15 miles basically due south of here. the way we re situated, because we re in wilmington, we re about 10 miles in from the coast here. when you get to carolina beach, you re a beach. you re actually on the coast. as al was saying, if this thing goes further south and it gets you with that northeast quadrant, this is the worst-case scenario for you. it is. it s catastrophic in the terms that we will get immense rain. we ll get immense wind, and we will have complete total destruction for our tidal surge. one of the things that makes it very difficult on the beach strand is that we have not only our beach, the oceanfront, but we also have a sound, and we get a lot of tidal flooding on a regular basis. that s typical of this area. this is an estuary. this will rise, and when that surge comes in, there will be a surge here in places that are surroun
at least 1.5 million people is underway in the carolinas and virginia, and just a short time ago, the national weather service posted a satellite shot of this monster storm. i have to show this to you. issuing a dire warning. look at the storm, a dire warning for people to follow those evacuation orders and prepare for life-threatening flooding. joining me now is nbc s al roker and michael cramer. he s the town manager of carolina beach about 25 miles south-southeast of here. it s an island under mandatory evacuation. michael, stay with me for a second. al, let me start with you. here is the latest. as you mentioned still a category 4 storm. we haven t had much of a change from our earlier update. however, it s a little closer now, 485 miles southeast of wilmington, north carolina. it s 130 miles per hour winds, so still a very strong category 4. its movement northwest at 15
