With time winding down and the Thompson Warriors only leading the Vestavia Hills Rebels 7-3 midway through the fourth quarter, it felt like the game hung in the balance in a battle of two of the top five teams in Alabama.

The Vestavia Hills High School football team hoped to advance deeper into the postseason, but the Rebels may have put the rest of Class 7A on notice.

Vestavia Hills High School gave Thompson all it wanted on Friday night in the second round of the Class 7A state playoffs, but the Rebels fell in a tight game.

The Thompson Warriors (7-2, 6-0) trounced the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats (5-3, 3-3) 49-7.
