As rents surge and thousands face housing insecurity, statistics suggest almost three in 10 houses are empty in parts of Queensland's Gold Coast, while the national average is 10 per cent.

Around 8000 homes in the Eurobdalla Shire Council, which stretches along the NSW South Coast, sit vacant for much of the year as their owners primarily live outside of the area. 

More than 80,000 houses are not being rented out across Queensland as the states deals with an extremely tight rental market that has caused some people to live in tents.
