County commissioners approved Monday, March 11 a draft agreement with La Casa Wind, LLC for a tax abatement agreement regarding a proposed wind farm in Stephens County. The agreement will allow La Casa an annual PILOT (Payment In Lieu of Taxes) payment of at least $445,051 for the 10-year abatement period. That payment amount is considered to be the floor amount. The total amount owed each year will be the greater of 50% of all property taxes abated by the agreement or $445,051.

Stephens County and the Texas Department of Transportation announced today, Dec. 27, that both entities hope to have the US 180 bridge that crosses over Hubbard Creek Lake, known locally as “Mile Long Bridge,” open before classes resume for Breckenridge ISD.

Stephens County is set to achieve a first in the state of Texas. When Stephens County Judge Michael Roach begins to hear misdemeanor cases in January, the county will also become the first rural county in the state to host a mental health court. Roach spoke to the Rotary Club of Breckenridge Tuesday, Dec. 19 to give an update on the county. Stephens County's U.S. 180 bridge over Hubbard Creek Reservoir was closed to all traffic after TXDoT engineers determined it to be unsafe.

The US 180 bridge, also known as “Mile Long Bridge,” crossing Hubbard Creek Lake will be closed to all traffic for several weeks, following an emergency inspection by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Unlike other attempts at removing them, the city is planning to clear both sides of the street — in the past, they’ve only cleared one.
