South Dakota Urban Indian Health is introducing a new way to support Native youth and their families this holiday season with their first annual Family Winter Gathering and toy drive. 

"When the state takes custody and then doesn’t act in the full best interest of the child, in that way, it is destructive,” Jennifer Johnson said.

At Wednesday night's city council meeting, funding was approved for South Dakota Urban Indian Health to expand outreach efforts.

"It's not a problem that we have to clean up," city councilor Rich Merkouris said. "It's about people that we need to connect with and understand."

After working for about two weeks in South Dakota Urban Indian Health’s new downtown location in Pierre, medical receptionist Miranda Barta has already noticed a difference.

Medicaid expansion begins in South Dakota on July 1, a move sparked by a successful ballot initiative last November in which 56% of South Dakotans voted for the expansion.
