will do well in new hampshire but it s not clear to me after new hampshire where he goes to generate support. david, let s get back to the breaking news we reported. michelle kaczynski from the white house, the president s executive actions he ll announce in the east room to tighten gun control in the united states. politically speaking on the campaign trail, how does this play? barack obama the president in his last year solidifying a legacy in putting an issue front and center but on the campaign trail, this is a gift for both parties because this is an issue that rallies the base of each party and so republican presidential candidates out there responding saying barack obama is going to try to take your guns and start violating the second amendment, which isn t necessarily true in what he s proprosing but going to engender a lot of enthusiasm. on the democratic side, hillary clinton will tout this as this
likely to get a gun. let s go live to our white house correspondent michelle kaczyns kaczynski. what do we know? at this point the white house is not wanting to give away any detail but we know this will involve at least some expansion of background checks and that is one area where there is actually broad support among americans including republicans, including gun owners. the president has long wanted to tackle, let s call this gun show loophole where certain smaller time sellers private sellers are able to do these transactions and there is no background check required. without congress, the president isn t going to be able to do anything that broad. if he listens to certain recommendations from groups, he might put a number on it. say, if you sell more than 50 or some number of guns per year, then there has to be a background check and overall that could involve a large number of people.
