Environmentalists and residents of the South Texas border city of Laredo are expected to testify in large numbers Tuesday night during a public hearing being held by a state agency that is considering whether to allow a company to continue operations that are directly linked to cancer-causing air emissions.

Air quality continues to be a cause for concern for many residents in northwest Laredo, but a proposal on city council's agenda could provide some relief to those living in the Mines Road area.

An EPA letter to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requests the public comment period be extended in the Midwest Sterilization permit request.

The air quality permit renewal request from Midwest Sterilization was addressed by Laredo City Council as it will submit a request to the TCEQ for a hearing.

During Monday’s city council meeting, Councilmember Vanessa Perez proposed that the city reach out to TCEQ to send a letter requesting an extension for 60 additional days to allow public comments from the community.
