Sweeping zoning amendment affects units per lot, setbacks and parking requirements

The City of Whitehorse has learnt its bus manufacturer could stop making diesel engines within two or three years. But it's deemed electric transit wouldn't work in the Yukon capital, at least not without major infrastructure upgrades.

With plan to ban exploration in city pitched by residents, council considers new permitting system

The city is looking at tweaking two pieces of policy, to protect groundwater and reduce disturbance for residents. One option would effectively prohibit mineral exploration and extraction within the entire city. Another option would make public input and city approval a prerequisite for mining permits.

Council will hear from the public on Feb. 26

As exploration is permitted at Mount Sima Road property, group vies for OCP and zoning alterations.

The City of Whitehorse has granted mineral exploration company Gladiator Metals permission to drill in an area near Mount Sima and Copper Haul Road. 

The Yukon government has approved a mineral exploration project by Gladiator Metals, a company fined earlier this year for infractions at another exploration project near the city.
