London Aim- and Botswana-listed diamond exploration company Botswana Diamonds has been granted a five-year prospecting licence on ground containing a cluster of kimberlites in South Africa. Involved is the Reivilo cluster of three kimberlite pipes, with sizes of 3.1 ha, 1.7 ha and 0.9 ha, all within a 250-m radius.

Denmark will take stakes of 20% in new offshore wind projects, copying a successful setup used for oil licences in the previous decades. Bloomberg reports that the model will cover 6 GW of tenders planned around the Nordic country, which has a target to become carbon neutral in 2045. Expanding its fleet of offshore wind farms is vital to achieving the goal.

Engineering News editor Terence Creamer discusses the findings of the ‘2023 South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey’, which was compiled by Eskom in collaboration with the South African Wind Energy Association and the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association and whether or not Eskom is up to the task of addressing the grid constraints identified by the survey.  

The iron-ore corridor rail line, in the Northern Cape, that had to be closed after a derailment on June 5 has been cleared and Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has started with the necessary repairs. TFR expects the repairs to be concluded by 16:00 on June 8.

Eskom has announced that loadshedding has been suspended until 16:00 on Tuesday "due to an improvement in available generation capacity".  However at 16:00, it will immediately jump to Stage 4 until 05:00 on Wednesday where it will move to Stage 1, as originally communicated. This pattern will then repeat until further notice. 

Copper 360, which listed on the AltX of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in April, has reported encouraging new drilling results. The Copper 360 business is focused on processing historical mined copper rock dumps as well as mining surface and shallow copper resources, and its latest drilling results confirm copper intersections at the Rietberg copper mine, as well as the discovery, during a recent surface channel sampling campaign, of a new surface copper deposit at the Wheal Julia site.

Leonard Ramatlakane has been relieved of his duties as chairperson of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). This follows an investigation by PRASA into the misuse by Ramatlakane of one of the rail entity's properties in Cape Town.
