The St. Louis Catholic Archdiocese downsizing generated strife and objections, but it has also inspired new partnerships and communities.

Two parishes will be absorbed by other parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, church leaders announced Thursday.

Reversing decisions made by Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski almost a year ago, the Vatican ruled this week that it did not find just cause for the Archdiocese of St. Louis to merge three parishes and close one other as part of its restructuring plan.

Before announcing the changes in May 2023, the archdiocese held 350 listening sessions, with at least one in each of the 178 current parishes.

St. Angela Merici and St. Martin of Tours were granted reprieves by the Vatican court, while St. Roch will still be closed.

With the purchase of a sprawling new campus in Florissant, Missouri, Augustine Institute president Tim Gray said he envisions not only growth of its graduate program, but for it to become a “crossroads” for the renewal of the American Church.

Parents thought they raised enough money to keep the school open.

The Augustine Institute will work with the Archdiocese of St. Louis on educational events and outreach to local Catholics.

The organization announced on Tuesday that it had purchased the former Boeing Leadership Center in Florissant, Missouri, just outside of downtown St. Louis.
