Operations have been halted at the mine indefinitely, as tensions between labour unions AMCU and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) intensify.

AMCU is fighting for organisational rights at the Gold One Modder East operation where NUM is the only recognised union representing workers interests since 2012 but the slow process has triggered frustrations among some workers who want the vote to be expedited.

Workers at the mine launched a fresh bid for organisational rights after a group of disgruntled workers protested outside the East Rand operation on Thursday.

The gold mine was at the centre of the recent hostage drama that saw over 500 workers being trapped underground for three days amid a labour dispute between rival unions NUM and AMCU.

Disruptions to mine activities have reportedly cost up to R 8 million a day.

More than 100 miners who police and mine officials said were held against their will by fellow employees of the mine near Johannesburg had escaped earlier, according to a mine official.
