NEC says recently announced slight drop of unemployment is likely to change from bad to worse with planned job cuts

Sporadic protests at the Gold One Modder East mine over organisational rights had concerned residents writing to management, calling for an urgent meeting demanding a timeline on when the dispute would be resolved.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) intends to continue with its urgent court application on Thursday

The contentious agreement sparked protest at the mine, with workers accusing the NUM of failing to put employees’ interests first.

A protest by AMCU mineworkers on Monday led to some being arrested for contravening a court order prohibiting them from engaging in illegal strike action, and malicious damage to property for setting a vehicle alight.

This as workers continue to pile pressure on the company to grant trade union AMCU organising rights.

The tension stems from union rivalry was initially de-escalated without any incidents, but there have been sporadic protests outside the operation since then.

NUM now says an early dissolution of the agreement could put an end to lenghty legal processes and avert a labour crisis at the mine.

Police fired rubber bullets and teargas at the protesting AMCU workers, who have been assembly at the mine since Sunday night.

Workers are calling for another union, AMCU, to be granted recognition at the mine. They have giving Gold One until the end of Friday to conduct the balloting process or face heightened industrial action.
