The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Ashor Sarupen says the recent so-called hostage dramas at Gold One’s Modder East operation point to policing failures.

The second sit-in at the Gold One mine in Springs ended late Monday morning as miners who went underground on the Thursday night shift began resurfacing.

The mine’s head of legal Ziyaad Hassam said about 300 of close to 500 mineworkers resurfaced on Monday, adding that they anticipate the remainder will also follow suit.

Miners have reportedly been held against their will at the bottom of the mine shaft for a third day. Reports also suggest that the hostage drama at the mine in Springs has turned violent as workers allegedly clashed underground.

The Gold One Modder East operation in Springs confirmed on Sunday that a miner man managed to escape an underground sit-in at the mine.

Its understood a group of AMCU supporters blocked the shaft entrance, trapping close to 500 miners. This is over the mine’s decision to fire workers who took part in Octobers illegal strike that resulted in a hostage situation at the time.

It is the second such incident at the mine in just over a month.
