Prior to joining MBZUAI in November, Dr Xing was associate head of research at the machine learning department at Carnegie Mellon University in the US, one of the leading AI research institutes in the world.
He said his first priority for MBZUAI was to develop a “critical mass” of research output and impact in the shortest amount of time possible.

Saanvi Chouraria has become the youngest kid to complete an internship in artificial intelligence at the University of Oxford. Separately, she has finished a certification in coding with Google.
The youngster s parents, Annu and Abhishek, wanted to inculcate digital skills in their daughter early on. Saanvi is a very logical-minded and inquisitive kid. We thought of introducing her to the world of AI as we knew that it would be among the most sought-after skills in future, Annu noted.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence welcomed its first students during an online event on Tuesday.
The 78 students from 29 countries will begin their studies in Abu Dhabi this week. There are 14 Emiratis in the cohort.
International students began arriving in Abu Dhabi in November to receive a cultural introduction to the UAE, and to complete Covid-19 health and safety precautionary measures.
Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and chairman of the MBZUAI board of trustees, in his welcome speech to the students emphasised the importance of AI.
“I am delighted to welcome the first cohort. With global expertise and a truly international student body hailing from 29 countries, the university will empower the UAE to become a leader in the field of AI,” he said.
The event welcomed 78 students who have joined the University from 29 countries, including the UAE, Canada, China, Egypt, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United States, and others.
