Just over a month after Quebec declared an end to its mpox outbreak, officials have confirmed two more cases in the Montreal area.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued an update following the WHO's declaration that "the multi-country outbreak of monkeypox constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern." According to a statement from the government agency on Saturday, July 23, there are currently 681 confirmed cases of monkeypox across five provinces in Canada.

On July 23, the World Health Organization officially declared monkeypox a global health emergency. The last time the WHO declared an outbreak a global health emergency was with COVID-19 on January 30, 2020. However, things are looking different with monkeypox. "Since early May 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic, and continue to be reported in several endemic countries," the WHO stated.

The Canadian government has announced a big chunk of funding for communities affected by the recent monkeypox outbreak. In a press release put out by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the feds confirmed a $1 million commitment to support organizations across the country that advocate for communities that have been disproportionately affected by monkeypox outbreaks.

Monkeypox is on the rise in Quebec as reported cases of the illness increase to a total of 331. In a matter of weeks, Quebec's reported cases of monkeypox jumped by 110 — making it the epicentre of the virus in Canada. As of July 22, Canada has reported a total of 681 cases of monkeypox, with 288 reported in Ontario, 48 in British Columbia, 12 in Alberta and 2 in Saskatchewan.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed a total of 477 cases of monkeypox in the country as of Wednesday. According to PHAC, The laboratory is conducting whole genome sequencing, an enhanced fingerprint analysis, on Canadian samples of monkeypox.

In only a matter of weeks, the number of monkeypox cases has skyrocketed in Quebec and the rest of Canada. The province remains the Canadian epicentre of the monkeypox virus as Quebec officially reached a total of 211 cases as of July 6, 2022 — an increase of 209 cases in a matter of a month. The majority of monkeypox cases are in the Greater Montreal area.

The case numbers for monkeypox in Canada have increased since the disease was first publicly reported in the country back in May 2022. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), as of July 4, there are 300 publicly reported cases of the illness across four different provinces.

All the cases have been reported in the province of Quebec, PHAC Canada said in a statement, adding that samples are being received for confirmatory testing from multiple jurisdictions, reports Xinhua news agency.
